I used to want a Thompson sub machine gun. They weigh about 13 lbs. It's like pointing a garden hose. Spray em down. I've kind of given up that dream because ammo is so expensive and a good "chopper" will blow 600 rounds a minute. Can you imagine standing facing a wall and having someone blow 20 to 30 rounds of 45 caliber hardball into your lungs? NO! There're mercs carrying Thompson guns all over the world right now. Probably the best short range mass fire weapon ever produced. Did you ever hear the song: "Rollin the Headless Thompson Gunner"?

I saw one on KSL today. I'd love one, but as you said, expensive to unleash.
As for a more modern approach to mass lead at a close range, I'd go for the Hammer shotgun system. Vehicle mounted, remote controlled dual automatic shotguns.. Accuracy, massive lead, and if you have the right credentials - small grenade rounds. |

FA is a great deal of fun... if someone else is footing the ammo bill.
FYI, it's "Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner", and that's a great freakin' song! I got invited on a MG shoot a few years ago, got to shoot all kinds of stuff... an M4 clone, an M1, a Browning belt-fed w/thumb triggers, taht was AWESOME, a couple Uzi's, Mac10's, a G3?, and the Mad Max Iver Johnson LOL that was a really good time. anyway. the post made me nostalgic |
